Tasting Notes

The opaque ruby-purple color of the 2017 Bancroft Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon hints at the aging potential for this bold and complete Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Extremely complex on the nose with a savory edge, the wine opens with a floral lift followed by deep, rich aromas of blackberries and dark plums layered with notes of smoked meats, tobacco and clove. On the palate, the wine displays the full power and age-worthiness of Bancroft Ranch, with immense depth of fruit, fresh acidity and dense, broad and ripe tannins that coat the mouth with dusty cocoa and espresso notes. Focused, dense flavors of black currant, cassis and kirsch lie at the core layered with savory notes of anise and black pepper, earthy cedarwood and graphite. Full bodied, highly structured and tightly knit with a long lingering finish, this 2017 Bancroft Ranch will continue to reveal itself for years and decades to come.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2020

"This is a beautiful, vivid cabernet with blueberry, currant and floral aromas that follow through to a medium to full body. Ultra-fine tannins. Very long and fascinating. Caresses your palate. A real beauty. Drink in 2023."

    • Technical info
      • Vintage: 2017
      • Alcohol: 15.1%
      • Volume: 750 mL
      • Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
      • Appellation: Howell Mountain AVA, Napa Valley
      • Brand: Beringer Vineyards
      Vintage Notes
The 2017 vintage provided high quality thanks to lower than average yields. The year began with abundant rainfall. Spring weather was mild, resulting in extended flowering in some areas with little shatter. Vines were vigorous thanks to the winter rains. A freak hail storm passed through quickly in June causing isolated damage. Three heat events, including one over Labor Day weekend, kicked harvest into high gear, dehydrating some grapes by early September. Cool weather arrived immediately afterward, allowing sugar levels to return to normal. Most late-ripening red grapes continued to hang on the vine and were picked throughout October.
