Tasting Notes

Robust tannins and an earthy finish make this a superlative display of Howell Mountain fruit. Careful attention is paid to vineyard blocks, which are kept separate and vinified with a goal of extracting maximum flavor.

James Suckling, February 2022

“Ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and plums with notes of vanilla, licorice, dark chocolate and pinewood. Dark and smoky character with full body, chewy tannins and meaty structure. Plush, delicious fruit. Holds long and even with hints of crushed stones and walnuts at the end. Try after 2025.”

Jeb Dunnuck, May 4, 2022

“Classic iron, darker foresty, herbal notes, and both black and blue fruits emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Steinhauer Ranch Vineyard, a medium to full-bodied, balanced, nicely concentrated Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. It has textbook mountain tannins and structure, and tasted blind, I'd almost guess 2018 given its pure, focused, Bordeaux-like stature. It's not massive, nor does it have a ton of baby fat, but I love its mid-palate density and overall balance. Hide bottles for 4-5 years if you can, and it should keep for 20+ years.”

      Vintage Notes
The beginning of the 2019 growing season was defined by copious rainfall and late soil moisture. The long, warm summer saw very few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. The long, relatively mild finish to the season, not without its moments of unpredictability, helped to preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit with abundant hang time teasing out great color, structure and soft tannins. Volume is looking to be about average to a little less than average. All in all, exceptional fruit with bright acidity and ample texture promises an amazing vintage.
